Impressioni Generali I commenti di clienti e collaboratori hanno concordato su un punto chiave: il 2023 risulta più accessibile del previsto. Il grado alcolico moderato, il Merlot maturo e l’acidità fresca rendono molti vini piacevoli anche in questa fase giovanile. Pur con alcune etichette che necessitano di tempo, l’impressione generale è di equilibrio più che di potenza. Si tratta di un’annata ideale per un consumo a medio termine, con grande sicurezza e soddisfazione.

 La Rive Destra è stata generalmente considerata la più convincente, in linea con le prime osservazioni dei report en primeur. I vini di Pomerol e Saint-Émilion hanno mostrato frutto generoso e tannini fini, mentre quelli della Rive Sinistra sono risultati più eterogenei, con vini sia classici e strutturati sia più sottili e lineari.

L’analisi en primeur di FINE+RARE aveva descritto il 2023 come “un’annata definita dall’equilibrio”. I vini in bottiglia sembrano confermarlo: coerenti, espressivi e guidati dalla freschezza più che dall’estrazione. Rive Destra – Vini in Evidenza A Pomerol, Clinet e Gazin sono stati tra i più apprezzati, con frutto maturo e trama morbida. A Saint-Émilion si sono distinti Canon, Canon la Gaffelière, Clos Fourtet, Troplong Mondot e Valandraud. Come previsto, Valandraud è stato il vino più potente della serata, mentre Canon e Fourtet hanno impressionato per precisione e persistenza.

Beau-Séjour Bécot ha ricevuto ottimi riscontri – una conferma rassicurante per chi lo aveva acquistato en primeur. Rive Sinistra – Vini in Evidenza La Rive Sinistra ha offerto numerosi successi, anche se con maggiore variabilità tra le diverse zone. Léoville Barton e Lynch Bages sono stati tra i vini più elogiati per profondità e equilibrio classico.

Pichon Comtesse, molto apprezzato già in botte, è stato nuovamente tra i preferiti, considerato da alcuni persino più completo in bottiglia.

Altri vini degni di nota: Pichon Baron, Rauzan Ségla, Les Carmes Haut-Brion, Brane Cantenac, Duhart Milon e Domaine de Chevalier. Smith Haut Lafitte Blanc ha ricevuto commenti entusiasti per freschezza e nitidezza. Sauternes e Barsac I vini dolci hanno attirato particolare attenzione. Molti degustatori li hanno considerati le vere stelle della serata, con Suduiraut descritto come eccezionale – ricco, equilibrato e persistente. Anche Coutet ha colpito per l’armonia tra dolcezza e acidità.

L’opinione generale è che il 2023 segni un altro anno di successo per Sauternes e Barsac, dopo due annate già molto forti. Conversazioni con i Produttori Un tema ricorrente nelle discussioni con i rappresentanti degli château è stato il confronto tra le annate recenti. Molti hanno indicato il 2022 come la migliore del decennio, in particolare sulla Rive Destra, con la 2016 spesso menzionata come riferimento.

Il 2019, pur molto apprezzato dalla critica, è stato raramente citato – un promemoria di come le preferenze evolvano con la maturazione dei vini e il cambiamento delle condizioni. Conclusioni Per clienti e colleghi, la serata ha confermato che il 2023 è un’annata di chiarezza ed equilibrio, con vini della Rive Destra particolarmente convincenti. La Rive Sinistra offre diversi esempi classici di grande qualità, mentre Sauternes continua un periodo di eccellenza.

 In sintesi, il 2023 non va considerato un’annata “blockbuster”, bensì misurata, coerente e riflessiva — un’annata che parla più di equilibrio e terroir che di potenza. Sarà interessante osservare come questi vini continueranno a evolversi in bottiglia nei prossimi anni. FINE+RARE ringrazia sinceramente la Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux e tutti i produttori e loro rappresentanti per aver condiviso i loro straordinari vini. In 1991, Jean-Luc Thunevin made the first vintage of Valandraud. In the workshop next to his house, he produced just 100 cases of wine from tiny yields, de-stemming and punching it down by hand and ageing it in 100% new French oak. Although it didn’t have a name yet, the garagiste movement had been born.  As the Super Tuscans had in Italy, these maverick bottlings, operating outside the official classification, rocked the world of wine – especially in the conservative heartland of Bordeaux. At the same time, the likes of Harlan and Colgin were starting to prove the power of Cabernet Sauvignon in Napa. Meanwhile on the East Coast, a lawyer called Robert Parker had already gathered a loyal following for his newsletter, offering independent advice and a novel scoring system. The internet was just getting started. Everything in the world of wine was changing.  “In the 1990s there was formidable energy and consumers who were ready to accept something new,” says Thunevin. But the Bordeaux wine trade was stuck in the Middle Ages, he says; it was aristocratic, closed – and one reason why the garagistes, a collection of outsiders, caused quite such a stir. Thunevin himself had been in banking, while Jonathan Maltus (Le Dôme) was a British businessman and Stephan von Neipperg (La Mondotte) a German interloper. With the challenging conditions of 1991, the first vintage of Valandraud had little impact. He made a tiny volume of red, and then a rosé de saignée that he gave away to friends. “L’histoire, c’est ’92,” Thunevin tells me, almost whimsically. The wine, a product of much more favourable growing conditions, put him on the map. “I created a revolution,” he says today. The 1991 Valandraud was released to négociants for 13€; the 2022 came out at 118€.  It was Michel Bettane who coined the term “vin de garage”, sneeringly suggesting that these new-fangled wines could be made in someone’s garage. But, as Jean-Luc Thunevin told me, “By talking about me, they made me exist.” Without such outrage from wine’s more traditional core, the garagistes likely wouldn’t have had the same success. Combine Bettane’s throwaway comment with the rise of garage music in the US and UK, and the movement gained an accidental cool-factor – but that’s all changed now.  “I don’t think anybody wants to admit they were a garagiste anymore,” Jonathan Maltus – the Englishman who created Le Dôme in 1996 – says. He looks back on the time with relative fondness, however. He’d arrived in Bordeaux in 1994, buying Ch. Teyssier, having sold his petrochemical business and decided after a stint in Cahors that he needed to be in the “Formula One” of wine, making for Bordeaux. It was an English wine merchant who told him how a single-vineyard Pomerol called Le Pin was causing a stir – one of a handful of “cuvée wines” that were becoming incredibly popular. As a canny businessman, he decided to give it a go himself.  “It was really exciting – and there was no budget,” Maltus says frankly, explaining how the movement rapidly became a game of one-upmanship. They would instantly snap up any new machinery or equipment, pushing their concepts further and further to out-do each other. Green-harvesting and picking only the ripest berries in multiple passes was de rigueur; the vines often stripped of their leaves to expose the fruit to the sunshine and maximise ripeness (something climate change has put paid to). Yields were consistently low, with over 30hl/ha considered too much to produce the requisite concentration. Maltus explains how the introduction of double-sorting and cold-soaking was radical – both expensive tools, with the latter requiring protective gas and the ability to chill tanks. He would put the wine into one set of new French oak barrels for malolactic fermentation, before transferring the wine to another batch of new oak for ageing. The resulting wines were bold, rich and lavish. “I like to think of it as a kind of Vivienne Westwood period,” Maltus says.  Ask any of the garagistes who inspired them and they’ll point to, among others, Le Pin. Although owner Jacques Thienpont firmly believes Le Pin is not – and never was – a garage wine; he feels that it is sometimes mistakenly seen as one because it was so successful at the time. Ironically, the wine was originally made in a garage, from just one hectare of vines. It was the sensuality of the wine that inspired Jean-Luc Thunevin, he tells me. He visited Le Pin several times and Thienpont told him that wine was all about the quality of the soil, rather than winemaking. “In the cellar, there are no secrets,” Thienpont says. Thienpont wasn’t Thunevin’s only advisor; Alain Vauthier of Ausone happened to be a school friend, and helped the amateur winemaker.  This tension between terroir and technique is at the heart of the garagiste movement. Jean-Luc Thunevin tells me how Valandraud was not a garage wine, but a “garden wine” – from 300 vines he planted on 0.6 hectares, a single site captured in 300 bottles. For Stephan von Neipperg, who made the first vintage of La Mondotte in 1996, from 4.5 hectares, “It’s a terroir… without an outstanding terroir, you cannot make an outstanding wine.” The garagistes, in his mind, by contrast were about “making the wine easier to understand – round, ripe, sometimes too ripe, extracted” – it’s a term he assigns to the likes of Ch. Gracia – first made in 1997, in a back-alley of Saint-Emilion.  Whether you are convinced these wines were true expressions of site or not, they were a direct contrast to the Médoc Classed Growths – where vast swathes of land were used to create a blend each year. Was it a reaction to the Left Bank’s dependence on blending, maybe even a complacency? Perhaps, but it was also a consequence of what each of them could afford; none of them, at first, had the cash to buy any more land. Thunevin’s methodology, for example, wasn’t idealistic; he had to do everything by hand because he didn’t have a tractor or any other equipment, splurging on new barrels alone, and turning a profit for the first time only in 1995.  It’s hard to untangle the movement from Parker’s influence – but few of the early renditions earned the big scores one expects and associates with these vins de garage. Le Dôme, for example, only earned 100 points in 2010 – long after Maltus had started reining in the style, La Mondotte in 2009. Although 1992 Valandraud kickstarted the movement, Parker only gave it 87-88 points when he first rated it in February 1994. Time blurs lines, inevitably – and, although it’s undeniable that Parker’s palate aligned with plush, polished styles, the truth around his influence is more complicated.   “We realised that the whole thing was just becoming a parody of itself,” Maltus says. He points to 2002 a real turning point, but it was only from 2008 that he stopped double oaking, reduced the proportion of new oak to 80%, and more recently started picking earlier. It’s the same across the spectrum, with many of these rebel estates now part of the formal classification system – absorbed into the establishment.  The instigator Jean-Luc Thunevin was branded Bordeaux’s “bad boy” for having challenged the status quo. It’s a reputation that he worked hard to keep – continually pushing forward (indeed, he even makes wine under the Bad Boy name today). Asking what prompted him to create Valandraud – and make it so differently, he says, “I have always been out of my mind. I always wanted to do things that were a bit shocking.”  Today, Bordeaux has more competitors than ever before, with a world of fine wine that is now truly global. Thunevin feels it’s a region in crisis – in need of another bad boy to take the baton. He was an outsider with nothing but a romantic dream of making wine. Whether you like what he did or not, he changed Bordeaux for good. “Les rêves sont nécessaires à notre équilibre,” he tells me – dreams are essential for our balance. Ritiene che ci siano “più successi complessivi sulla Rive Droite che sulla Sinistra, semplicemente perché è molto difficile mascherare un Cabernet non maturo”, e in generale i secondi vini non sono consigliati quest’anno, con un notevole salto di qualità. Nei migliori rossi, l’acidità dona “succo, muscoli e salinità”, con il Médoc che offre Claret lineari, “floreali, fragranti, sfumati”. Evidenzia in particolare la qualità di Saint-Julien e osserva che ci sono “molti vini eccellenti” a Pauillac, mentre Saint-Estèphe è più variegata. 
 La Rive Droite ha prodotto il suo vino dell’annata – Eglise-Clinet – ma osserva come Pomerol sia variegata, con alcuni vini di successo che sono “favolosi, elevati, aromatici, di grande qualità” e altri meno riusciti, generalmente con i migliori provenienti dall’altopiano interno. A Saint-Émilion, osserva come l’austerità naturale del calcare abbia dovuto essere gestita – ma “ci sono molti vini gustosi, di successo seppur slanciati” nell’appellazione. 
 Sottolinea la qualità dei bianchi nell’annata, sia dolci che secchi, con “maggiore coerenza e molti vini eccellenti”. I bianchi secchi offrono grandi aromaticità, ma non hanno la densità dei migliori vini, da cui il suo tetto ai punteggi. Descrive i vini dolci come “meno lussureggianti dei 2022 e 2023”, ma con “molti vini equilibrati, deliziosi e pieni di piacere”.

Sebbene ammetta che i vini siano “ovunque in termini di qualità e stile”, ritiene anche che “i migliori vini abbiano molto da offrire”. Dopotutto, “il meteo non è più l’elemento critico nel determinare la qualità dei vini e quindi di un’annata”. 
 Sottolinea quanto sarà fondamentale l’élevage nello sviluppo dei vini, aspettandosi “un livello molto alto di variabilità nei vini finiti” – ritenendo, come indica il titolo del suo rapporto, che molti dei vini stiano su un “filo del rasoio”. Galloni descrive i 2024 come aromatici, tendenti al frutto rosso, con i migliori che “trasudano equilibrio” – sebbene alcuni possano essere “eccessivamente leggeri”, rendendo l’annata “frustrantemente irregolare”. Tuttavia, è “ben lontana dal totale disastro” suggerito. Per lui è un anno in cui la Rive Gauche e il Cabernet sono fioriti, evidenziando i vini di Saint-Estèphe e Pauillac, e trovando quelli di Pomerol e Pessac-Léognan i più variabili. 
 Sottolinea la qualità dei bianchi secchi nel 2024, che sono “tra i migliori” dell’annata e possono essere “davvero eccezionali”, offrendo al contempo un valore relativo. Quanto ai dolci, sono – per lui – molto buoni, ma non straordinari, non avendo il “fattore brivido degli anni davvero migliori”.

Sebbene non sia coerente, ammette che ci sono vini che “sfiorano il cielo”, e i migliori sono “belli” – offrendo aromi “delineati e focalizzati”, vini equilibrati in cui una “spina dorsale di acidità dona portamento”, con “ampia freschezza e sapidità”. Sono, scrive, “vini ideali da ristorante che offriranno un piacere di beva facile mentre aspettate che i 2019 o i 2022 maturino”. 
 Martin evidenzia la qualità dei bianchi secchi – con condizioni fresche che producono “Sauvignon Blanc/Sémillon avvincenti e tesi che spesso superano le loro controparti rosse”. Per quanto riguarda Sauternes, riferisce che sono molto buoni, ma non classicamente opulenti, piuttosto “pieni di freschezza e purezza”.

This week saw the latest iteration of Saint-Emilion’s controversial classification unveiled. The classification has been caught up in legal battles, with many of the region’s leading properties deciding to abandon the system altogether. In fact, three of the four top estates previously classified as Premier Grand Cru Classé A – Ch. Ausone, Ch. Cheval Blanc and Ch. Angélus – all jumped ship, with La Gaffelière (a Premier Grand Cru Classé B estate) also leaving.  The 2022 classification has been much anticipated and it’s brilliant news for Ch. Figeac – who were the only estate promoted to the top rank of Premier Grand Cru Classé A, joining Ch. Pavie. This estate has long been one of the top performers in the appellation, with recent vintages consistently impressing consumers and critics alike. While Bordeaux’s Left Bank was classified in 1855, the Right Bank didn’t establish an equivalent ranking until the 1950s. There are classifications for the Graves, Sauternes and Barsac, as well as the Médoc across the Gironde, but it is only Saint-Emilion that has been classified on the Right. How does Saint-Emilion’s classification work?  The classification was first established in 1955, dividing the appellation’s properties into three levels of quality based on a scoring system. The top wines are classified as Premier Grand Cru Classé A, followed by those that are Premier Grand Cru Classé B and then the Grand Cru Classé.  From the beginning, the idea was to try and create a more democratic system that rewarded estates’ efforts and avoided complacency. While the 1855 Classification was assigned to the château – essentially the brand, rather than the wine or specific vineyards (meaning properties could expand and shrink, yet their status wouldn’t change), the Saint-Emilion classification is judged both on terroir and the château’s performance. The classification is also reassessed every 10-15 years, with the most recent update in 2022. How are properties in Saint-Emilion classified?  As mentioned, the ranking of estates is based on a scoring system, out of 20.  For the Premiers Grands Crus Classés, the score is based on: a tasting of 15 vintages (representing 30% of the score); the property’s national and international reputation, its promotion and distribution (35%); the quality and consistency of the terroir (30%); and the property’s approach to viticulture, vinification and traceability (5%). To sit within this bracket, estates must earn 16 out of 20, with the best earning Premier Grand Cru Classé A status.  For the Grands Crus Classés, the score is based on: a tasting of 10 vintages (representing 50% of the score); the property’s national and international reputation, its promotion and distribution (20%); the quality and consistency of the terroir (20%); and the property’s approach to viticulture, vinification and traceability (10%). In essence, there is more focus on the tasting and the property’s practices, and less on terroir or its reputation and representation in the market. To achieve Grand Cru Classé status, a property must earn 14 out of the possible 20 points.  Because there is a detailed assessment of the soils, properties can have some but not all of their land classified. For example, Ch. Angélus had only 27 of its 39 hectares deemed worthy of Premier Grand Cru Classé A and Ch. Canon only has 24 of its 34 hectares classified as Premier Grand Cru Classé B. Why is Saint-Emilion’s classification controversial?  While the intention to try and create a classification system that was both dynamic and about the land was noble, it hasn’t quite worked out that way. There is much debate about the different factors that contribute to a property’s score, with the proportion tied to distribution and marketing a particular point of contention. With its constant evolution, this gives more room for controversy – with anyone demoted inevitably disgruntled. All in all, the result is a legal battleground, with accusations of undue influence and more.   The initial classification took three years to finalise, and it has since been re-drawn in 1969, 1986, 1996, 2006, 2012 and 2022. After the 2006 classification, five estates filed lawsuits against their demotion, while the 2012 only brought more cases to the courts.   Ahead of the 2022 classification, most of the Premier Grand Cru Classé A estates left the classification (Ch. Ausone, Ch. Angélus and Ch. Cheval Blanc), leaving just Ch. Pavie in the top rank of the classification, joined by Ch. Figeac in 2022. Read more about the classification’s recent controversies here. What about Saint-Emilion Grand Cru? Saint-Emilion Grand Cru is – confusingly – very different to Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Classé. This isn’t a classification but an appellation – one that has the exact same geographic area as Saint-Emilion AC.  Properties need to apply to be part of the classification but can otherwise make wine under the area’s two appellations – Saint-Emilion AC or Saint-Emilion Grand Cru AC.   “Grand Cru” status is not tied to the quality of the terroir but dictated by yields (a lower maximum of 40hl/ha), a higher minimum potential alcohol and longer minimum ageing requirements (only permitted to be bottled 16 months after harvest), and must be estate-bottled. The idea is that this leads to a higher-quality, richer wine. Your guide to the Saint-Emilion classification

Bordeaux is arguably the world’s most famous wine region – known for producing some of the finest wines in existence, with a long history stretching back to the Roman era. But the region is broadly divided in two – the Left and Right Bank. (Terms that you may also hear in reference to Paris, and – less frequently – Chablis.)  The region is defined by its waterways – a forked tongue that snakes southeast from the Atlantic. The Gironde estuary is fed by the Dordogne and Garonne rivers, with the Gironde flowing into the Atlantic. The south-eastern side of the Gironde and Garonne is the Left Bank, while the north-western side of the Gironde and Dordogne is the Right Bank. The section of land that sits between the fork of the Garonne and Dordogne is the intuitively named Entre-Deux-Mers (literally translating as “between two seas”), and is mostly home to more everyday, entry-level wine – although quality has certainly improved here with both climate change and technical advancements (such as Ch. Marjosse).  The Left and Right Banks, however, are where you’ll find Bordeaux’s most illustrious names. While both regions craft exceptional wines, they are extremely different in terms of terroir, the grapes grown, the estates themselves and how the wines are classified.  The Left Bank The Left Bank is the aristocratic and historic home of fine wine in Bordeaux, famous for the 1855 classification of the Médoc, a ranking of the top estates of the region which still stands today, including the fabled First Growths – Ch. Latour, Ch. Lafite Rothschild, Ch. Mouton Rothschild, Ch. Margaux and Ch. Haut-Brion.  It was Bordeaux’s ties to England that saw it rise to prominence – after Eleanor of Aquitaine married Henry Plantagenet in 1152. With Bordeaux under English rule, favourable tax rates saw the industry thrive. But the Médoc was, at that point in time, a marshland not worthy of wine-growing – with the best wines coming from Graves estates like Ch. Haut-Brion (where vines have been grown since at least the early 15th century).  It was only in the mid-17th century that the Dutch drained the marshy Médoc, creating the well-drained gravel soils that are now a haven for Cabernet Sauvignon. It was after this that most of the region’s grandest properties were established.  The aforementioned 1855 classification cemented the Médoc’s place in history, with the wines of Sauternes and Barsac categorised at the same time. The wines of the Graves were classified in 1959, while the Left Bank is also home to the Cru Bourgeois and Cru Artisan classifications.  The Left Bank encompasses, from north to south: the Médoc (which includes the prestigious communes of Saint-Estèphe, Pauillac, Saint-Julien, Margaux, as well as Listrac and Moulis), the Haut-Médoc, Pessac-Léognan and Graves, as well as Barsac and Sauternes. Although the area of course encompasses dry whites and sweets, stylistically “Left Bank” is used mainly in reference to the reds, which represent the vast majority of production.   The soils on this side of the Gironde are dominated by gravel, with the best sites sitting on deep gravels over clay subsoils. The vineyards are more spread out here, with patches of woodland and other agricultural land between the pockets of fine terroir, making distances and journey-times between estates longer. The gentle, barely undulating landscape masks significant differences in the soils, which determine the success of a site, with the mounds divided by streams known locally as “jalles”. Deeper gravel has historically been a significant advantage in the region’s maritime climate, avoiding water-logging and retaining heat that helps to ripen the grapes. Proximity to the Gironde and its moderating influence can also help shield vines from frosts, an increasing threat in the springtime.  Estates can be quite large on the Left Bank – for example, Ch. Cos d’Estournel comprises 100 hectares – allowing for higher production levels, which means the wines tend to be more widely available and can be found more easily on the secondary market, even at the highest quality level. The properties also tend to have picture-perfect châteaux, immaculate architectural displays of the wealth of the region.  Cabernet Sauvignon leads the way in terms of plantings, thriving in those warm gravel soils (and complemented by parcels of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, with some limited Malbec and Carménère). The variety produces small berries with thick skins, creating tannic, age-worthy reds.  The wine style varies between commune and estate, but generally speaking the wines of the Left Bank are dominated by graphite, cassis and blackcurrant leaf, full-bodied yet with a more linear structure that Cabernet Sauvignon provides. Historically the wines were austere in youth and needed time in the cellar, but wines today are made to be more approachable so that they have longer drinking windows. With age, the best wines develop beautiful complexity with notes of leather, cedar, tobacco and more.  The Right Bank The most famous wines of the Right Bank come from Saint-Emilion and Pomerol, however it is also home to: the Côtes de Blaye, Côtes de Bourg, Fronsac, Canon-Fronsac, Lalande-de-Pomerol, Côtes de Castillon, Côtes de Francs and the Saint-Emilion satellites – Lussac-Saint-Emilion, Montagne-Saint-Emilion, Saint-Georges-Saint-Emilion and Puisseguin-Saint-Emilion.  Although wine has long been made on the Right Bank, the wines – other than those of Ch. Cheval Blanc – were not known widely until relatively recently. The region’s modern history is tied to one man – the influential critic Robert Parker. He was one of the first to highlight the quality being produced at smaller Right Bank estates in the 1980s and 1990s, and put the wines on the international stage. His penchant for rich, ripe, concentrated styles prompted a wave of producers who did extensive green-harvesting, working with tiny yields, picking late, extracting heavily and ageing in new French oak, a style favoured by the far-reaching and famous consultant Michel Rolland.  Pomerol became home to the “garagistes”, after Jean-Luc Thunevin crafted his first vintage of Valandraud in his garage in 1991. These modern producers, who didn’t come with the land and smart châteaux found on the Left Bank, captured the imagination of consumers, and rapidly became highly sought-after.  Fashions have changed for the most part, and the wines produced today across the Right Bank are significantly more restrained – reflecting the general move toward freshness and aromatic finesse.   Of course, one reason that the wines of the Right Bank were less well-known was the smaller size of estates and therefore smaller volumes being produced – especially in Pomerol. Pétrus, for example, consists of 11.5 hectares, while Ch. Lafleur is a mere 4.5. In Saint-Emilion, Ch. Cheval Blanc and Angélus both have 39 hectares – a more generous vineyard area, but still relatively small in comparison to those in the Médoc. This means that the wines from the top estates are often strictly allocated and can be very hard to secure, with significantly less available on the secondary market.  The area feels very different to the Left Bank, with a more rolling landscape with more nooks and crannies, meaning you often can’t see what lies over the hill. The soils here are also significantly different, dominated by clay and limestone, with some sand and gravel. These soils stay cooler and retain more water, something that can be very helpful in hot, dry seasons (as in 2022). The finest wines come from the limestone plateau at the heart of Saint-Emilion and Pomerol plateau, with its pockets of rare blue clay. Limestone has an additional benefit of retaining freshness and acidity in the wines, with wines from limestone-dominant soils often having low pH.  Plantings are dominated by Merlot and Cabernet Franc (sometimes known locally as Bouchet), rather than Cabernet Sauvignon (which can struggle in the damp soils, although producers are planting a little more of the variety in response to climate change). Many wines from Pomerol are 100% Merlot (with estates such as Vieux Château Certan notable exceptions), while in Saint-Emilion the blends tend to include more Cabernet Franc. Merlot produces larger, thinner-skinned berries, and therefore Right Bank wines are generally softer, plusher, with a rounder texture, softer tannins, often floral with a redder fruit profile (cherry, plum), and can sometimes be exotic in perfume.   Unlike on the Left Bank, most of the wines are not classified formally, however Saint-Emilion introduced its own classification in the 1950s – one that has become a source of controversy.  Beyond Saint-Emilion and Pomerol, the other appellations can produce some fantastic wines, and – given the difficulty with buying additional land within these two illustrious areas – many of the Right Bank’s leading names have estates here (such as Ch. Lafleur’s Grand Village or Perrières, and LEglise-Clinet’s Montlandrie or Les Cruzelles). Confronta il 2023 con le annate 2019, 2001 o persino 1990 per i rossi, con alcoli più bassi e livelli di acidità vivaci che li rendono “alcuni dei Bordeaux rossi più luminosi e vivaci che [abbia] assaggiato da anni”. 
 Nella seconda parte del suo report, ha aggiunto il 2016, 1996 o 1995 alla sua lista di annate comparabili – quelle con “frutto maturo ed equilibrato e tannini fermi con alcol leggermente più basso e pH più basso”. Sebbene alcuni abbiano notato “la natura incoerente dell’annata”, non è qualcosa con cui concorda, scrivendo: “Ho riscontrato un livello di qualità molto alto”.  Per Kelley, il 2023 è “make or break” per Bordeaux in termini di prezzi, avvertendo che se i prezzi non scenderanno in modo significativo “tempi difficili sono all’orizzonte”, ma è chiaro sulla qualità dei vini: “I migliori 2023 sono emozionanti quanto i migliori 2022”. 
 Ripercorrendo la stagione vegetativa, sottolinea come il tempo tra fioritura e vendemmia sia stato tipico – il che significa che i migliori combinano “la profondità, la densità e i tannini maturi di un’annata soleggiata ma anche gli aromi e i sapori vivaci ed espressivi di una stagione più tradizionalmente ‘atlantica’”.  È “un’annata ibrida”, dice – che combina i caratteri sia delle annate moderne e soleggiate sia di quelle più tradizionalmente classiche. Offrono “tannini pienamente maturi e sensazioni di bocca setose e senza soluzione di continuità” ma “aromi e sapori vivaci, evocativi di frutti e fiori freschi” – eppure sono “ben lontani dall’essere frivoli” con la struttura e il pH che consentiranno loro di invecchiare. Coloro che hanno raccolto un po’ presto hanno prodotto vini dominati dal loro tannino, tuttavia in generale questa è un’annata che “ha tende[n]zialmente amplificato la voce di ogni tenuta e terroir”.

 Sulla scia della sua copertura preliminare, Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW ha pubblicato il suo report completo. Sottolinea l’imprevedibilità della stagione di crescita, un “gioco di Jumanji” che comportava “un elemento di fortuna legato al lancio dei dadi” quando si trattava di pioggia. Pur sottolineando che non è stata “una grande stagione di crescita ‘classica’ né una coerente”, ci sono “alcuni vini dallo stile classico ai vertici della grandezza” che sono “emersi dalla giungla di Bordeaux 2023”. 
 È, dice, un’annata “in cui il diavolo sta nei dettagli”, con questi dettagli che rivelano perché alcuni hanno trionfato e altri no. Fa eco ad altri descrivendo il carattere più classico dell’anno, “consegnando stili più freschi, più eleganti, energici” che attireranno i bevitori di Bordeaux più tradizionali. Alcuni produttori “hanno potenzialmente prodotto i loro migliori vini di sempre”. 
 Parlando della minaccia della peronospora e del suo impatto sulle rese, spiega che le grandi tenute con mezzi finanziari o le tenute più piccole e familiari che potevano offrire gli straordinari necessari potevano entrambe riuscire, ma altri hanno perso una quota maggiore del raccolto e – se il frutto malato non veniva scartato – ciò poteva incidere sulla qualità, conferendo “caratteri rustici ad alcuni vini 2023”. Era inoltre fondamentale, osserva, scartare eventuali acini scottati o disidratati. Altre decisioni importanti sono state raccogliere ogni parcella quando era perfettamente matura ed evitare potenziali diluizioni – cosa che non tutti hanno gestito. 
 Evidenzia che l’altopiano di Pomerol e i terroir calcareo/argillosi di Saint-Emilion hanno prodotto “più vincitori”, mentre sulla Rive Gauche ci sono “vini di vera grandezza” grazie agli “sforzi erculei” dei produttori. Conclude sottolineando come Bordeaux continui a offrire grande valore nella fascia bassa – “affari decisamente deliziosi da cercare”.

 Neal Martin ha pubblicato in fretta il suo report in vista delle prime uscite, seguito rapidamente da Antonio Galloni (sotto). Ripercorrendo la stagione di crescita, Martin descrive come “Madre Natura abbia tenuto i produttori con il fiato sospeso”. Cerca di chiarire la preoccupazione sulla peronospora – una pressione che variava per microclima e tenuta, ed è stata gonfiata dalla copertura mediatica iniziale, ma il cui impatto dipendeva interamente da come i produttori l’hanno gestita. 
 L’ha soprannominata “The Dalmatian Vintage” – scrivendo che offre “macchie di qualità sbalorditiva”, ma che è eterogenea, e quindi non “una grande annata certificata”, pur collocandola saldamente accanto a 2016, 2020 e 2022 con alcuni “vini magici”. Li descrive come più classici nello stile, privi “dell’opulenza e dei corpi rubensiani” del 2022, ma “più lineari e verticali” e con più frutto del 2021, uno stile che confessa “si addice alla [sua] predilezione”. Sottolinea una “energia nascente” che osserva nei vini migliori, e che il terroir sembra brillare particolarmente forte. 
 La dichiara “una grande annata per i bianchi secchi”, ma suggerisce che i Sauternes arrivino appena sotto il livello del grande (sebbene Suduiraut sia tra i suoi punteggi più alti). In tutto il report, sottolinea come le risorse finanziarie siano state fondamentali – per trattare contro la peronospora quando e quanto necessario, sacrificare rese, raccogliere e vinificare per parcella, senza contare la precisione in cantina. In definitiva, “le decisioni umane sono state critiche ovunque” – ma il 2023 è “adornato da una manciata di vini incantevoli”.

 Subito dopo il collega Neal Martin, Antonio Galloni è riuscito a far uscire il suo report mentre la campagna iniziava. Attribuisce il “bilanciamento fine, quasi classico” dei vini alle rese più generose dell’anno e – come altri – osserva come le migliori tenute siano riuscite a gestire la pressione della peronospora per evitarne l’impatto significativo. 
 I vini migliori, dice, sono “intensamente aromatici e profumati” con “acidità brillanti, frutto dai toni rossi e tannini lineari e vibranti” – generalmente con “marcatori di luogo molto chiari”, sebbene sostenga che i 2023 più deboli “possano sembrare leggeri e/o vegetali”. Per lui, la Rive Gauche è stata marginalmente più riuscita della Droite, con Saint-Estèphe come comune di spicco nelle sue degustazioni – dichiarando i vini “superbi, praticamente a tutti i livelli”, insieme a quelli di Margaux – evidenziando in particolare Palmer, Margaux e Rauzan-Ségla. 
 Non è d’accordo con Martin per quanto riguarda i bianchi – sia secchi sia dolci: per lui i bianchi secchi sono “un assortimento vario”, mentre i Sauternes sono “il gruppo più eccezionale di vini giovani [che abbia] mai assaggiato qui”, trovando che sia un’annata “epica” per Sauternes e Barsac.

 Per Jane Anson, l’annata 2023 mostra la “costruzione senza sforzo” che Bordeaux sa fare meglio – “producendo vini ben bilanciati, strutturati, pensati per deliziare nel lungo termine”. Ha assegnato tutti i suoi potenziali 100 punti alla Rive Gauche e ritiene che sia “un anno da Cabernet Sauvignon, in particolare nel punto dolce del Médoc settentrionale”. 
 Come altri, osserva che, pur essendoci alcuni vini eccellenti, è un’annata variabile e “nel 2023, se hai fatto la scelta sbagliata, sei stato punito particolarmente in fretta”. Trova Margaux e Pessac-Léognan meno coerenti di Saint-Julien, Pauillac e Saint-Estèphe. 
 Loda la “sensibilità più sfumata, guidata da terroir e tenuta” dei vini su entrambe le Rive, qualcosa che preferisce alla ricchezza dei 2022. Scrive che ci sarà poco bisogno di aspettare per bere i vini, ma “molti hanno la struttura per andare lontano”. 
 Per lei, ci sono alcuni “vini bianchi eccezionali” – “vini sfumati con aromi eccellenti”. I bianchi dolci sono più ricchi, ma con acidità vivida – vini che “consiglio seriamente di acquistare”. Per ciascuno dei suoi report, su Rive Gauche, Rive Droite e bianchi, ha fornito un elenco di acquisti di valore – insieme ai suoi vini con punteggio più alto.

 Il team di Decanter ha pubblicato il report a sezioni, con Panos Kakaviatos a supporto della molto incinta Georgie Hindle. La loro ampia copertura della stagione di crescita approfondisce le complesse condizioni che hanno definito l’anno. Per Hindle, i vini “impostano un nuovo tono per un Bordeaux fine, controllato e accessibile” con alcoli moderati, pH bassi e frutto succoso e maturo. Combinano “tannini finemente integrati” e “corpi dalla texture morbida” delle annate più calde, con “nervosismo, tensione, spezia, mineralità e delicati aromi floreali più comunemente riscontrati nelle annate più fresche”, e parlano della loro denominazione e della loro tenuta. 
 Qualitativamente, la colloca ben al di sopra del 2017 o 2021, ma ammette che non ha la qualità coerente del 2019, 2020 o 2022; anche se alcuni 2023 superano i loro omologhi 2022, con “eleganza ed energia”. A causa dell’incoerenza, è un’annata che ottiene un punteggio di 3,75 (su cinque) per i rossi, e quattro per bianchi secchi e dolci.  Sembra che lo stile dei 2023 non si adatti al palato di Jeb Dunnuck, che li trova “maturi ma non massicci o incredibilmente concentrati” e riscontra “stili divergenti”, con alcuni più vicini al soleggiato 2019 e altri più strutturati e freschi come il 2020. Concorda che: “Rese, assemblaggi, date di raccolta e fortuna con peronospora e pioggia rendono azzardate le generalizzazioni sul 2023.” 
 Per lui la combinazione di “aromatiche mature, buona freschezza e profili più medi a medio-pieni, lineari, è ciò che rende l’annata così interessante” – qualcosa che attribuisce al periodo di maturazione condensato alla fine della stagione. Ritiene che, sebbene ci siano “vini indiscutibilmente impressionanti dalla Rive Droite”, la Rive Gauche abbia vinto quest’anno – offrendo “un altro livello di armonia ed equilibrio complessivo”.

James Suckling First out of the gate is James Suckling, who is in complete agreement with what we have been told by the châteaux and tasted so far: this is another great vintage for both the Left and Right Bank, forming the third in a trilogy of great vintages for Bordeaux. He writes, “The Médoc reds are closer in character to the 2019 vintage with more linear and finer tannins and precise, pure cabernet fruit while the Right Bank, particularly Pomerol and St.Emilion, is more like 2018 with reds that have more flamboyant fruit and creamier, densely ripe tannins.” While he had heard reports of heterogeneity, 90% of what he has tasted “show an outstanding quality level from first growths to petit chateaux”. He feels that Merlot has excelled, however there are plenty of outstanding wines in the Médoc too – indeed several worthy of perfect scores. While she believes the Right Bank is similar in style to 1989 or the 2018s, she feels the Left Bank has more in common with 1996, 2000 and 2006 due to the tannic profile caused by the dry summer months. “You will find plenty of racy, supple tannins that power forward and have a sense of energy, but also tannins that are a little dry and sometimes underripe if the drought led to blockages,” she says. Despite many similarities in terms of tannin concentration to 2010 and ’16, she feels overall the 2020 vintage is not as consistent as either of these years. For her, the biggest potential issue was this risk of unripe tannins, typically in the Cabernet Sauvignon, mostly affecting the Left Bank. While she notes that some properties’ second wines bear the brunt of this, she commends the exceptional efforts of La Croix Ducru-Beacaillou, Mondot and Blason de l’Evangile. She highlights, however, that 2020 continues a trend in the region, with the best wines performing “a sleight of hand from the vintage conditions” – something that she feels comes from “a confidence that I find in Bordeaux today, where there no longer seems to be the need to choose the biggest tannins for the main estate wine, and instead many choose to prioritise site expression.” All her potential 100-point wines (of which there are five) come from the Right Bank, bar Ch. Margaux which takes the title of wine of the vintage on the Left Bank, while Ch. Canon steals the top spot on the Right. Collectively, they’ve tasted their way through the majority of major releases, publishing a range of articles around the vintage including tasting reports on the Left Bank, Right Bank and white wines of Bordeaux 2020. Perhaps most refreshing to hear is a positive article on the “revolution” that is taking place in Bordeaux when it comes to precision viticulture leading to
“delightfully fresh, expressive, 'new old' wines”. As for 2020, “There are admittedly some stunningly good 2020s, even if [it] is not as consistent a vintage as 2019,” Robinson says. Lawther highlights the surprising freshness of the wines, positioning it somewhere between ’18 and ’19. The lower alcohol levels on the Left Bank “delightfully combine the classicism of traditional Bordeaux with modern winemaking and vine-growing sophistication”. Similarly to Anson’s report, Robinson feels some of the later-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon wouldn’t have reached full maturity before the threat of early October storms forced
vignerons to pick by 30th September (something that didn’t impact the Right Bank with its earlier-ripening Merlot). She feels, however, the overall volume produced on the Left Bank allowed estates to be extremely selective, including only the finest lots in the Grand Vin. All in all, the team declares it a vintage that falls in favour of the Right Bank – with wines that have led Robinson herself to “[fall] back in love with” Saint-Emilion. On the Left, however, Robinson notes particular consistency in the wines of Graves/Pessac-Léognan,  jancisrobinson.com’s highlights: Lafleur, Margaux, Lafite Rothschild, Cos d’Estournel, Haut-Brion, Mouton Rothschild, Pétrus, Angélus, Pichon Baron, Vieux Château Certan, Montrose, Ausone, La Lagune, Léoville Barton, Prieuré-Lichine, Rauzan-Gassies, du Tertre, Kirwan, Canon, Figeac, Pavie Read the team's full report on jancisrobinson.com Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW – Wine Advocate For Wine Advocate’s Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, 2020 is “an enigma – a vintage that has been more difficult to understand than 2018 or 2019, with far more potential and, in some cases, greater growing season complexities than even 2017 (the year of the devastating frosts).” Despite comparisons with 2018, the wines are, in her view, very different. She highlights the differences between Left and Right Banks this year – with “more weight and generosity” in the latter, and more varied quality on the Left, noting that some from the Médoc lacked mid-palate weight. The key she thinks was the impact of the August rains: welcome relief for some, too late for others, and too much (therefore diluting the fruit) for certain properties in the Médoc in particular.  Overall she feels the variability brings 2020 in line with 2017 in some ways, however thinks that, at its best, the vintage is up alongside 2018 and 2019: “For some areas and terroirs, this is absolutely the third outstanding vintage.”  She notes that it is a simplification too far to declare it a Merlot vintage, as there are excellent wines from both Cabernets too. Pomerol and Saint-Emilion impressed her, while Fronsac and the Côtes de Castillon offer some great-value wines. Like us, she notes some outstanding performances from Pessac-Léognan. In the Médoc, she emphasises the importance of terroirs
with sufficient gravel to drain the August rains, as well as the budget and manpower to do the necessary work to manage the year’s challenging conditions. On the Right Bank, she characterises the best wines as “beautifully pure and perfumed expressions of ripeness”. Pessac is for her “staunchly earthy/savory”, while she warns some are dilute, the Médoc’s finest are “a paradox – lighter bodied, elegant, perfumed head-turners”. He feels it is “better than 2018 but doesn’t quite reach the peaks of 2019”.  While he describes 2018 as more hedonistic and 2019 elegant and purer, he believes the difference between 2019 and 2020 is marginal. “There are instances where 2020 will surpass 2018 and 2019,” he says, believing this will become clearer in bottle.  In his view, lower alcohols on the Left Bank have “allowed for greater expression of individual terroirs and more salinity in the wines”, but the finest examples are wines that also have great concentration. In contrast, the alcohol levels on the Right Bank are generally higher than in 2019 and the best wines of the vintage were those that managed to retain elegance. The 2020s’ slightly firmer tannins in general, Martin believes, will “merit long-term cellaring” compared to the 2019, which can be enjoyed earlier.    Martin highlights the cool nights in August and September as a key factor in determining the success of a Bordeaux vintage, helping the wines retain acidity – and 2020 had just this. These cool nights mean the wines have “excellent acidity levels that engender fresh wines with ample tension”.  As has been the case in the last three vintages, he has found greater consistency in the top hierarchy of wines, where the finer terroirs have kept the vines healthy through a challenging growing season. He notes that the early season rains have given the wines “a beautiful sense of purity”. As almost everyone has noted, it is this purity and freshness from such a warm vintage that is surprising.  He highlights the advantage of clay and limestone soils, as well as old vines. For him Pomerol is the star of the vintage (with “a bevy of legendary wines”), while Saint-Emilion and Pessac-Léognan also thrived. While he believes 2020 is not as consistent as 2019 or even 2018, he does believe the best examples are “incredibly exciting” and “unquestionably dazzling” wines.   For Galloni, the most important signature of 2020 is “a balance of richness and energy” which he believes is “highly unusual”. From his interviews with winemakers, he surmises that the cold August/September nights, along with the high seed count in the berries are the reasons behind the freshness of the wines, making them “sizzle with brightness and mineral-drenched vibrancy”.   He identifies Pessac-Léognan as the most consistent appellation of the vintage, which benefitted most from summer rains. The Left Bank, more generally, he says is more about “linearity and persistence rather than volume”, providing the wines with a classic feel and notably lower alcohols.
